In the highlands of Scotland, the largest town is Fort William. This town was originally situated around the village of Inverlochy; Fort William spreads at the southern tip of the Great Glen. It lies on the shores of Loch Eil and Loch Linnhe. Ben Nevis, the uppermost mountain area in the Glen Nevis and the British Isles is in close proximity with Fort William. The main interesting aspect of Fort William is that it is a popular tourist centre. This is in terms with the existence of Glenfinnan to the west, Glen Coe to the south, and on the Road to the Isles. Thanks to its close intimacy with Ben Nevis, and the numerous Munro Mountains, one can consider it as an important centre for hill walking, hill climbing, and other such activities. Fort William is most famous for its Downhill Mountain Bike Track. This attracts tourists in millions every year, who are all from different tourist backgrounds. There are also ‘Witches Trails’, which uncannily seem to attract more people than the Downhill Track. Each year, Fort Hill proudly hosts rounds of UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. This is a very popular event attended by one and all. Cultural Fort William Gaelic is spoken by a few citizens of Fort William. Charles Kennedy and Daniel McLean McDonald are some of the famous people in the world who hail from Fort William. The movies shot in Fort William include Harry Potter, Braveheart, and many more. |
